Monke's investigation
1952, Greece and the whole world have been shocked by an incident that took place. The famous ship “Maria J” had been sunk. While framed by the media and the greek government as an incident, there was a truth nobody knew: The ship was ordered by it’s owner to sail despite the fact it did not meet the criteria for safety and he knew very well the sailors could die. All sailors were considered dead or missing, as no survivors had yet been discovered.
Amongst those mourning was a mother named Cathrine. She had 1 daughter named Martha and one son, a sailor, who was amongst those lost in the “incident.” The mother suspected that it wasn’t a simple incident, but who would believe her? The ministers of the government all claimed that it was.
Until she heard the news: Someone was in Greece, someone who could help her. It was SMERSH leader and soviet agent Comrade Monke. Monke was staying in a hotel in Piraeus, a hotel near the port, close to a catholic church, one of the few compared to the number of orthodox churches in the majority-orthodox Greece.
Monke was drinking some vodka when he was visited by the mother. “Excuse me, what do you want?” Monke asked. “I need your help, Comrade Monke” she said and proceeded to explain the situation. “Lady look, i’m no detective” Monke answered. “Please Monke, you’re the only one who can help me!” she said. Monke was thinking, and he reluctantly agreed to help her, but he wasn’t sure whether he could do much.
The next day, Monke paid a visit to the house of the ship owner. However, he found, instead, his daughter. He interrogated her, and she told him the truth: It wasn’t simply a case of the owner neglecting the criteria for safety, but he purposefully caused the ship to sink so that he could get the insurance money, leading to so many innocent sailors dying. It was basically murder. Monke was pissed, and promised to himself that he would find the ship owner and cause him great pain.
Monke asked the ship owner’s daughter where the owner was, and she told him that he had left for West Germany. Monke wasted no time. He booked a flight to West Germany and began looking for the ship owner. Together with Monke traveled a couple SMERSH members, so they could all together investigate where the ship owner was.
Monke and the SMERSH operatives split up. After about 2 weeks passed, one operative finally discovered where the ship owner was: He lived in a mansion, not far from west berlin. Monke told the operatives to get a car and go park outside the Mansion. Monke got in the car and when they reached the mansion he got out.
Monke walked to the front door, which was guarded by two men. “I’d like to see the owner of this fine estate please” Monke said. When the guards were about to check him for guns, he knocked them out and went inside.
He lied to the guards inside, telling them he was a mail man, and had a message for the owner of the mansion. When the owner came downstairs, he asked Monke what he wanted, to which Monke responded “I want you to give yourself to justice for what you’ve done, heartless bastard.” The ship owner laughed, and said “no way.” “Are those your last words?” Monke asked. When the owner responded with yes, Monke took out a gun, shot him and ran away before the guards could get him. He got inside the parked car and they got away, eventually reaching the airport and taking a flight back to Greece.
Monke informed the mother of what he did, and the mother thanked him. Monke then returned to the USSR and his dacha.
